It’s time to admit what you really want…

I remember sitting on the back patio with my husband seven years ago. It was a warm evening and the sun was just setting over the horizon. It wasn’t the first time he’d asked me this question, but it was the first time it really bothered me: “If you could do anything with your life, what would it be?”

Such a simple question. And one, I know for a fact, many of you have been asked too.

But this simple question is the hardest to answer. Why? Because we’re programmed to feel the need to answer it based on societal norms – answer it with our dream job and all the things that will give us, but then tell ourselves all the reasons why that would never work out (this is a whole coaching session in and of itself!).

What’s funny to me about that now, is that the “dream job” isn’t even the answer of what we really want. It’s not about a job, or an achievement, or a status, or title. It’s about how we want to live our lives – in alignment with what we really believe.

What we REALLY want is the thing most of us haven’t even admitted to ourselves yet. It’s the thing that will give our life purpose – not in the doing, but in the being. It’s the thing that is so real and core to us, that will let us be who we REALLY are.

In that moment, I wasn’t ready to admit that I didn’t want the title, the status, the achievement. Why? Because I couldn’t even envision any other way of living – not for myself, my family, my future. I couldn’t imagine living life on my terms, with a pure sense of freedom, confidence, calm and joy.

What is it that you aren’t admitting to yourself? Do you really want to release the self-induced pressure to perform, scale back on work and enjoy life? Do you want to be free of a relationship that’s holding you back and not allowing you to be your true self? Do you want to prioritize yourself in your life? Do you want to accept, I mean really accept, something about your life that you currently feel judged on?

When you can get real on what it is you want at your core – what will set your soul on fire – THEN this becomes the blueprint for how you want to live your life. Not what society wants for you, or your parents want for you, or your friends want for you. It’s what YOU want for you.

It’s time to get real.

Carve out some time this evening, and throughout the coming weeks and consider these questions:

1.     What are the things I feel I should or have to do in my life that are not making me feel fulfilled?

2.     Why am I prioritizing them?

3.     Are they my priority, my spouse’s? Are they an expectation of my “role” in society?

4.     What are they holding me back from?

5.     What is the most beautiful version of my life that I can imagine?

This last question? THIS is the blueprint of your true purpose in life – who you REALLY are. It’s time to make your true self blissfully happy and fulfilled.
